So when I hear my boss misuse common expressions — which I frequently do — every inch of me cries out for justice. Even my feet, which rarely cry out for anything, scream with a proletarian desire to overthrow his reign of idiocy.
Today, a new expression has been mangled with oblivious glory. He giddily exclaimed to an associate, "That's right! You'd better hit or get off the pot!"
The... the hitting pot?
If it's possible to commit an innocent typo over the phone, I'm unaware of the logistics. I would love to hear his explanation and the full etymology of "hit or get off the pot," but it's not worth it.
Anyway, he also told me once that his ill daughter had been "flashing in the pan all night." Maybe it's a cookware-related verbal deficiency.
